How Did Google Start?
This September, Google will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
On September 4, 1998, two graduate students at Stanford University founded the company that became the world's largest search engine within ten years.
Google’s founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, studied Web sites’ linking patterns to develop a more powerful search engine that could rank the usefulness of Web pages based on how many views they receive.
They named their portal Google to highlight their goal of organizing the world’s vast amount of information.
“Google” comes from the math term “googol,” which represents 1 with 100 zeros coming after it.
According to online research, Google is now the most visited Web site on the Internet.
Google handles more than 8.5 billion searches per day, or more than 99,000 every second.
For fun, you can even Google yourself — that is, enter your name on Google and view the search results.
