Battle of Myeongnyang [2016-08-15] Battle of Myeongnyang is one of the famous historical combats in Korea. The Korean Joseon kingdom’s navy, led by Admiral Yi Sun-Shin, fought with only 13 naval vessels against Japan’s 130 vessels. It occurred in the Myeongnyang Strait, near Jindo island on October 26th, 1597. This naval battle is regarded as one of Admiral Yi’s most remarkable victories. At the same time, it is a humiliating naval defeat for the Japanese.
Culture Day Every Last Wednesday of the Month [2016-08-08] Every last Wednesday of the month is Culture Day where movies, performances, exhibitions and sports games are offered at a discounted price. The Culture Day was launched in January 2014 to promote cultural activities. On these occasions, people are encouraged to visit museums and watch movies, musicals, plays and dance performances. 2016 Rio Summer Olympics [2016-08-01] The 2016 Summer Olympics will kick off on August 6th and run until August 22nd at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It will be the first Olympics held in Latin America since 1968. The Olympic organizers are expecting to host some 10,000 athletes from 206 countries, where they will take part in 28 events with 306 gold medals. The Olympic mascot called Vinicius represents Brazilian wildlife. Team Korea is aiming to win 10 golds and get a place in the top 10 for the fourth consecutive Olympics.
Brexit Became a Reality [2016-07-25] Brexit is a compound word of “British” and “exit” which refers to Great Britain leaving the European Union(EU). British Prime Minister David Cameron promised the in-and-out referendum on EU ahead of Britain’s 2015 general election. After his election victory, he finally held a referendum on June 23th, 2016. British people opted to leave the EU and Brexit will become a reality. The vote to leave the EU also has become the biggest risk to global economy.
First Landing on the Moon [2016-07-18] Apollo 11 was the first spacecraft that landed humans on the moon. Neil Amstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on July 20, 1969. Amstrong became the first to step onto the lunar surface about six hours after the spacecraft landed. Aldrin joined him before long. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft and collected 21.5kg of lunar material for return to Earth. This is one of the greatest moments in the history of mankind.
Constitution Day [2016-07-11] Korea formally adopted its first Constitution 68 years ago on July 17. The date was chosen to coincide with the founding date of the Joseon Dynasty. It was designated as a national holiday in the fall of 1949. However, the day no longer became a national holiday since 2008 because of the reconstitution of laws regarding the public sector with a 40-hour work week. Citizens hang the national flag at their house doors from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to honor the establishment of the Korean Constitution.
