Traditional Korean Festival, Dano
This year, one of Korea's most important traditional festivals, Dano, happens on June 23rd on the solar calendar.
This celebration always takes place on May 5th of the lunar calendar, the day when planting season ends, and growing season begins.
In old times, people would have ceremonies with players to the skies in hopes of a good harvest.
The traditional celebrations also included singing, dancing, eating rice cakes, and giving others hand fans to stay cool in the summer.
Dano Day is especially well known for its fun folk games.
Men participated in traditional wrestling contests called ssireum, with the winner receiving a bull as a prize.
Women competed in geunetagi, a contest in which the winner is the one who swings the highest.
Today, people in Korea can ride swings, try out traditional foods, and experience many other Dano activities at various festival gatherings taking place around the country.
