Main Types of Trains in Korea
Every year, on June 28th, Korea celebrates Railway Day.
It was on this day, in 1894, that Korea established a government department to manage railroad transportation.
Korea’s modern railway system, Korail, offers quick and convenient travel via four different types of trains.
Tourists often use the KTX, or Korea Train Express, service, as it connects Korea’s biggest cities.
The high-speed trains complete the trip from Seoul to Busan in just 2 hours 45 minutes.
There is also an even faster SRT, or Super Rapid Train, service that links Seoul’s Suseo Station with Mokpo and Busan.
To reach tourist destinations near smaller cities, the Saemaul is a good choice.
It is cheaper than the KTX service, and its trains are still fast and comfortable.
Finally, the Mugunghwa trains are the cheapest to ride, but also the slowest.
However, they are perfect for relaxed trips to scenic towns in the countryside.
